Officers from the New Canaan Police Department received a report of a man who was possibly intoxicated sitting in the driver’s seat of a car in a Bank of America parking lot shortly after 1:40 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the driver, Kevin McDermott, 63, was spotted by officers attempting to back out of the parking space, and upon approaching him, they “immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from McDermott’s breath.”

According to police, while speaking with McDermott, officers found a large open bottle of vodka in the center console. McDermott proceeded to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested under suspicion of driving while impaired.

McDermott was charged with driving while drinking, a misdemeanor. Following arraignment, he was released on $250 bail and is due back in New Canaan Justice Court later this month to answer the charge.
